Pretty much all rugged Panasonic Toughbooks and other top field-designed mobile computers are certified according to a couple of general standards. One of those is the Ingress Protection (IP) standard. The level of a computers IP rating is how well it can keep foreign objects from getting within and causing havoc with the electronic parts.
The 1st number represents how defended the laptop is against solids, and the second number represents how protected it is against liquids. The lack of any real protection against any solids is a 0. The computer’s ability to keep out solids starts with a 1, suggesting the machine can keep out large objects like hands. A 2 means fingers can be kept out, then each number represents the facility to keep out smaller objects like tools and wires (3), small tools (4), most dust (5) and all dust (6).
The second number indicating the power to keep out liquids like water and spills has a range from 0 to 8. The 0 rating means it isn’t shielded against liquids, while an 8 indicates that it can be immersed and still work.
A laptop with an IP65 rating is protected against anything as little as dust, and light water spray, such as a wave splashing onto the PC or a light spray. A second number of 1 means it’s safe against drips. The PC is shielded against something like light rain. A 2 means a wind blowing rain, and a 3 means it’s probably safe against a heavier downpour.
An IP with 4 as the second number can handle mild splashing, while a 5 is protection against a more direct water spray. A 6 can handle the water jet from a powerful hose, or heavier splashing such as one might run into at sea. Understanding these types of certifications will help you compare how protected these computers are so that you can make the very best choice for your cash.
